Rainbow Writing: students trace lthe etters to a word using multiple colors, creating a rainbow word.

Books for Visualizing
Color Me a Rhyme, by Jane Yolen(Boyds Mills Press)
Simplistic rhymes are depicted through visual illustrations. Each rhyme is about a color. This book is a great resource focusing on primary and secondary colors, that reinforces vocabulary.
The Little Light of Mine, by E. B. Lewis(Simon and Schuster, 2005)
This book focuses on illustrations that reenacted the hymn, This little Light of Mine. Emotions and feelings can be visualized as the story focuses on an out going African-American Boy who befriends a very sad boy. Not only is this a great book for expressing feeling, but also awareness of expressing feelings visually.
The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, by Henry Wardsworth Longfellow (Dutton’s Children’s Books, 1990)
Higher level book for older students, perhaps 4th and 5th grade. This book is great for visualizing the author’s words. This is a poem that was written in 1861.
Thirteen Moons on Turtle’s Back, by Joseph Bruchac and Jonathan London (Philomel Books, 1992)
This book is about the Native American Calendar. It is written in poetry that has vivid illustrations. It is about a boy who asks his grandfather to explain the many moons.
Books for Questioning and Seeking Answers
The Scarlet Stockings Spy, by Trinka Hakes Noble (Sleeping Bear Press, 2004)
The setting is during the Revolutionary War. The book focuses on a family, patriotism and hope.
Train to Somewhere, by Eve Bunting (Clarion Books, 1996)
It is a mature story, not necessarily appropriate for all classes. This book is about a homeless girl who journeys west on an orphans train in search of a family. It is a good discussion book.
The Widow’s Broom, by Chris Van Allsburg (Houghton Mifflin, 1992)
It’s a surreal book about a witch. The witch gets injured and is befriended by Minna Shaw. And Minna finds the magical broom which brings chaos to the house.
The Talking Eggs, by Robert Souci (Dial Books, 1989)
This is a book that is good to compare and contrast the two main characters. Similar to Cinderella, the characters plot against each other. Blanche and Rose are the characters.
The Other Side, by Jacqueline Woodson (Putnam, 2001)
This book is about symbolism. The focus of the book is about a young African American girl who is told never to go over the fence.
The Virgie Goes to School With Us Boysby Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard (Simon and Schuster, 2009)
This book is about practicing the questioning strategies. It’s a true story about a girl wanting to go to school. She struggles to find opportunities to go to school.
Books for Making Inferences
The Memory String, by Eve Bunting (Clarion Books, 2000)
This book is about a family who’s building relationships after losing their mother. Buttons are used for symbolism.
The Royal Bee, by Frances Park and Ginger Park (Boyds Mills Press, 2000)
It’s about a little boys who wants to go to school. He is not accepted by the master to go to school. Through time he manages to get into school and be the top of the class.
Beatrice’s Goat, by Page McBrier (Simon and Schuster, 2001)
It is about Heifer International. The book is to educate students on how to reach out globally. The story is about a girl named Beatrice who lives in a mud hut and is pursuing a better life.
Sister Anne’s Hands, by Marybeth Lorbieki (Dial Books, 1998)
This is a story about an African American girl going to a Catholic school in the 1960’s. Along the way she meets an African nun who she ends up bonding with.
Books that Make Predictions
Rain Forest, by Jinny Johnson (Houghton Mifflin, 2006)
This is a great book to gather facts for science. There are vivid pictures of global areas. The book provides multiple resources about the rain forest.
The Snow Princess, by Ruth Sanderson (Little, Brown, 2004)
This book is written in a fairytale format. The book is based on an Russian Opera. The story is based on the Snow Princess growing up and having to make decisions.
Santa’s Snow Cat, by Sue Stainton (HarperCollins, 2001)
This book is about a cat who travels with Santa on accident. This book can be used for predicting what the cat will do. Illustrations are vivid.
Books that Determining Importance
Forest Explorer, by Nic Bishop (Scholastic, 2004)
Large photographs are used in a collage to illustrate a life in the forest. This is a nonfiction book about a forest.
Feather and Fools, by Mem Fox (Harcourt Brace, 1989)
Is a book about a peacock and a swan. The story is an allegory about two birds that plot against each other. The book is about the rise and the fall of each of the birds. The ending illustrates two eggs hatching. One a peacock and the other a swan.
The Lotus Seed, by Sherry Garland (Scholastic, 2004)
This book reinforces Veterans Day. It is narrated by a Vietnamese grandmother named Ba. She finds a lotus seed that is kept as a keep sake. The seed is taken from her by her brother where she is unable to get it back.
